The Key Stages
Key Stages: Basically modern schooling from entry into the primary school through to leaving the secondary base is divided into 4 Key Stages. These Key stages are assessed using National Curriculum Levels decided by the government. These NCLs may be awarded by the teacher based on continual assessment or through SATs exams (external exams) in the case of the core subjects (English, Maths, Science and soon ICT).
Key Stage 3: Years 7-9 At Key Stage 3 students take a variety of mandatory subjects and will receive an end of Key Stage National Curriculum Level in each of them. The National average for the end of Key Stage NCL will be different for each subject so a student who is Level 6 in two subjects might actually be better than the majority of the country in one subject and worse in the other! The national averages for each subject will be posted on this site for comparison.
Key Stage 4: Years 10-11 (GCSE) At Key Stage 4 students have a core of mandatory subjects (e.g. Maths, English Language) and then choose a number of "Options" from other subjects such as Art, Music, History, Geography, French etc.). At the Five Islands School every Key Stage 4 student also takes short course RE. The rest of the timetable is made up of Games (mandatory by law) and PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) intended to help the student prepare for life outside school.
